Resistors

Fixed resistors control current in an electrical circuit. Resistors with a fixed resistance value, which is the ratio of voltage to current, are called "fixed resistors". Depending on how it is mounted to the circuit, a resistor is called a "wire lead" type that mounts vertically to the circuit, and a "surface mount" type that mounts flush to the circuit surface. Resistors are also referred to by the name of the material used; resistors that are made using metallic material are called metal film resistors and those with carbon are called carbon film resistors. The material used in chip resistors is metal glaze that combines metals or metal oxides with glass and is sintered onto alumina substrate at a high temperature. Resistance values range from 1 Ω to 1 MΩ as standard; products that meet the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards for resistance and tolerance values are called "E-series". Many feature a rated power of 0.25 to 5 W, and metal oxide film resistors are used in mid-power range applications and coiled wire resistors in high-power applications.
