Cables with connectors join cables to cables and cables to electrical appliances. While it is possible to crimp cables or fusion-splice optical fibers, cables connected using these methods must be severed to disconnect. Cables with attached connectors allow for easy engaging/disengaging by detaching the connectors. Available types of connectors are plugs, jacks, receptacles, adapters, and more. The types with a protruding contact or wire core are called "male" connectors, and the types that are concave or have holes in the wire core are called "female" connectors or "socket inserts".
